Working Out Should Be Fun!

  • What do you think of when you hear the word “Exercise?” What about the phrase “Work out?”
  • I would bet that the majority of people in the United States conjure up images of treadmills, gyms, group cycling classes, and people sitting at Nautilus machines doing rep after rep after rep. These images explain why many people have to force themselves to get their blood pumping and “Work out.”
  •  The whole fitness industry focuses on the end result rather than the process. If you asked somebody why they were hitting the gym three times a week, it is much more likely that the person would respond, “To get a flat stomach,” than “Because I love it!” The majority of people want to be fit, healthy, and have bodies that reflect that, but they don’t really care how the goal is accomplished. Whether it is paying money for supplements, or trying the latest workout fad, people just want results.
  • That ain’t right!
  • Moving our bodies and working up a sweat should be fun. If one was to look at the current fitness industry right now, fun is absolutely not at the top of priority lists.
  • On one hand there are the Shake Weights, Ab Rockets, and Chest Magic products that are designed to give you the benefits of working out without requiring you to have to actually exert any effort. On the other hand there are the P90X, Crossfit, and Navy Seals workout programs that are all about maximum exertion and measurement of results. Finally, there is the middle ground of people that make up the majority of gym-goers. This group of people does their best to get in a couple runs, weight lifting sessions, or lap swims a week.
  • What do the above categories have in common? All three groups do not enjoy their work outs.
  • Working out should be about playing and fun rather than about obligation and societal pressure. So put down the Shake Weight, step off of the treadmill, and stop killing yourself at Crossfit.
  • Having said that, there is a population of people who enjoy pushing their physical limits working as hard as they can. If you fall in this unique category, then by all means run your ultra marathons, max out on your deadlift, and train as hard as you can.
  • But for the largest portion of people out there, exercising should be about blowing off steam from other parts of your life that stress you out. Make fitness one of the most enjoyable parts of your life.
  • This can be accomplished many different ways.
  • Playing a sport is one great way to enjoy being active. Team sports are great for building camaraderie and making friends while still working up a sweat.
  • Another option is to get into an individual sport or activity like running, hiking, or biking. If you choose to pursue one of these options you have to make sure what you are doing is enjoyable. If you are running, make sure you are outside enjoying nature and going at a comfortable pace. The same goes for biking, because treadmills and stationary bikes are about burning calories, whereas running and biking outdoors are about adventure.
  • Whatever you choose, make sure you enjoy it! Remember, working out should fill you with excitement, not dread.
