Dress Thinner Tip #2: Long skirts for tall women, below the knee for short.
If you are very tall, you can wear a longer skirt that will elongate the look of your

Why is it that celebrities always look skinny in red carpet photos? I live in NYC’s West Village and I can
vouch that your average celebrity Ain’t All That. She tends to be short and bobbleheaded with proper
child-bearing hips just like you and me (except for Giselle Bundchen and Sienna Miller, the skinny
little…).
So how is it that in pictures they all appear so slim-ly terrific? More importantly, how can we look 10
pounds thinner in photos?

The secret is in the pose. (That, and the fact that they starve themselves a week before events and get
sprayed by professional tanning people and wear gut-sucking Spanx and …). Back to the pose. Here
we share five secrets to appearing 10 pounds thinner in photos. You can practice these tips in front of
a mirror, but we suggest locking your door first so as not to be caught appearing vain.

Secret No. 1: Turn partially sideways to the camera, planting one foot in front of the other. Point your
toe to the camera and place your weight on your back foot.

Secret No. 2: Pull head forward slightly to minimize any appearance of a double chin.

Secret No. 3: Hold arms slightly away from your body. This keeps upper arm flab from flattening out and
therefore appearing flabbier (much like thighs do when one sits on a couch).

Secret No. 4: Pull shoulders back, chest forward and gently suck stomach in. Be careful not to suck
stomach so far in that your ribs show, thereby causing those who later see the photo to cluck to
themselves in a bemused, sing-song voice, “She’s sucking i-in.”

Secret No. 5: If you can get away with it without looking like a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Cover Girl

If you want your face to look slimmer, wearing a hairstyle that frames your face will only call more
attention to that roundness. Also, if you have a double-chin that you’d prefer to hide, a chin-length bob

the head, which will make your face look even wider. Instead, think about a longer hairstyle that

Don’t: Blunt Bangs

round face, it’s best avoid to avoid this hairstyle.

If you simply must have heavy straight bangs, at least make sure you have some height on top.

bangs, a softer bang look.

Do: Layers
Just about anyone can wear layers with good results. For those with rounder faces, layers are an easy
way to soften your curves. When hair is all one length, it tends to make the face look fuller. Adding
layers near the line of the cheekbone will highlight your bone structure. If you have thin or flat hair,
layers also add a nice boost of volume and movement.

Make sure, though, that you don’t let your hair poof out on the sides, as that will add width to your
visage. We recommend a longer, layered cut that goes past the chin for the best effect.

Don’t: Super-Short Cut
If you have a small, narrow face, longer hair can overwhelm it, and you’re better off with a shorter cut
to accentuate your features. But if you have a larger or rounder face, a super-short cut will backfire on
you. You can go somewhat short, though. Just think layers and volume at the top. This will draw the
eye upward — another face-slimming trick. Again, if you’re going shorter, don’t let your haircut end
directly at your chin. Go a little shorter or a little longer. We like a short, layered cut that hugs the head
close around the ears and cheeks (the widest part of the face) and has a bit of height on top. It’s a fun,
flattering cut.

Do: Asymmetrical Bob
Sure, earlier we said you should avoid the bob hairstyle, but we were talking about the blunt bob
that stops right at the chin line. The asymmetrical bob, on the other hand, can give you a very
flattering look. Here’s why: Not only is this bob ultra-chic — look at Anna Wintour — but it’s also easy
to maintain. An asymmetrical bob is much shorter in the back, and then angles down and is longer in
front. The cut should start in the back around the nape of your neck and then end in the front 2 to 3
inches below your chin. It elongates the neck and lengthens the face. Pair it with some sideswept
bangs and you’ll be in the pages of Vogue in no time.

Don’t: Stick Straight Hair
Poker-straight hair may be trendy, but if you don’t have a long, slim, oval-shaped face, the flat iron is
your enemy. Long tresses that fall straight and close to your head can actually make your head look
small and your face look heavy. Like we said before, adding volume in the right places is key to
minimizing a heavy face. You can still have the long hair you desire — just add some layers and volume,
and maybe even a few highlights

Do: Long Shag
The long shag appears to be the go-to haircut for round faces. The longer length (try for shoulder length
or longer) draws the eye down and makes your face appear slimmer. The layers soften up the style,
giving you a younger and more feminine look. Make sure bangs are angled and not too thick. Sideswept,
wispy bangs can minimize a wide forehead. And layers at the top of your head will add volume, and, once
again, create the illusion of a longer, more slender face.

Buy clothes that fit you. Whether you are a size 2 or a size 22, if you wear the wrong size clothes,
you’ll end up looking bigger than you are. Wearing clothes that are too tight leads to bulges and
lumps, just as choosing clothes which are too large adds to your size and makes you look bigger.
Don’t be ashamed of yourself.

Choose items which skim over areas you want to disguise. For instance, if you want to make your
tummy look flatter, move away from skin tight vests, and choose a flattering tunic. Instead of
choosing a mini skirt, hide chunky thighs under a floaty skirt. However if you go baggy, this will also
make you look larger than before.

Use caution when buying pants. Choose pants with a smooth front: no pleats! Pleated pants poof
out below the waistband, drawing attention to your stomach. Also, when buying pants, pay attention
to the rise. Too high a rise can create the illusion of a tummy even if you have a 6-pack, and too low
a rise can lead to belly fat hanging over the top of your jeans – not pretty.

Make sure you are wearing the right underwear. This is important. Thongs and g-strings are all well
and good if you have no fat on your body, but if you want to give the illusion of a skinny figure, go
for supportive styles which help to pull in the tummy. A well fitting bra can also help to create a
smoother slimmer figure. Take the time to go get a free bra fitting at an underwear store, or just
spend a good hour at the local clothing store trying on different bras, and keep an open mind about
your size

Highlight your good bits. If you have a beautiful slender neck, but a bit of weight on your waistline,
draw attention to your neck with an eye catching necklace, or other accessories. If you have toned
arms, wear a sleeveless top to make the most of your assets.

Work on your posture. Stand up straight, pull your stomach in, and your shoulders back. You can
practice posture by balancing a book on your head and walking – the book shouldn’t fall off!
Standing up straight automatically tucks your tummy in, and doing so makes you look more
confident as well. Whenever you get the chance, look in the mirror and make sure you are not
hunched over. Slumping will cause you to look shorter and less balanced; it can also cause clothing
to shift and appear to be ill-fitting. Also, bad posture can make you look like you have back fat when
you sit down and can make your stomach spill over the top of your pants. This is possibly the most
important tip, as bad posture can add pounds visually.

Wear more black! Black virtually slims out everyone, and reduces the appearance of belly fat, muffin
tops, and love handles. Black can easily be dressed up with a nice colored belt, jewelery or the
perfect shoes. Always wear dark colors!!!

Avoid horizontal stripes! It may seem stripes that go horizontally across a shirt or a pair of pants will
make your form look broader than it really is. In actuality, horizonal stripes help provide a
distinguishable line that allows for the illusion of a slimmer figure. Think about how often you see
vertical stripes on clothing. Fashion designers don’t use them for a reason.

Use flattering accesories! Big and beautiful accesories take attention away from…well basically from
everything else, so accesorize well. For example, if you have a nice waist but still have a kinda big
tummy, use a wide black belt (or any other dark color). The things you want to look smaller, use dark
