SPRING FEVER SOARS AT MOONEE VALLEY FOR THE 2015 COX PLATE

Aaah spring is in the air in Melbourne with Moonee Valley taking centre stage last Saturday with the 2015 William Hill Cox Plate. Trackside and snap happy, here’s a sneak peek at how the day unfolded…

There’s really no better time to find yourself in Melbourne. From late September to mid-November the iconic Spring Racing Carnival takes its place at the top of every well-versed Melbournian’s to-do list. But while many of the city’s most fashionable fillies are still finding frocks and fascinators for their trackside debut at Flemington Racecourse next week, for some of the more eager beavers, spring has sprung and already run at The Valley.

Sprinkled with sunshine and dressed to impress, the rowdy racegoers who descended on Moonee Valley Racecourse for the 2015 William Hill Cox Plate on Saturday certainly had something to celebrate when a record-breaking run saw the pre-race favourite Winx demolish her rivals and claim victory by five lengths. For those not “in-the-know”, that’s a fair ass-whooping.

Widely considered Australia’s premier weight-for-age championship, the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate is the flagship event of the William Hill Cox Plate Carnival and one of the highlights of Melbourne’s Spring Racing season for genuine racing fans. For the rest of us mere mortals who lack the serious horse racing gene there’s definitely less celeb watching, fashion, fine food and social festivities on offer here than what awaits you during the legendary Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington Racecourse next week.

So without that Flemington-style uber carnival to keep you teetering on your tippy toes, what’s the best way to experience Cox Plate Day? Do like we did and spend the day in style with a table in the Inner Circle dining room. Feast on a three course meal, have your drinks dished up to the table without any dreaded race day queues and reserved seats in the grandstand mean you’re right in front of the winning post for a perfect view of the track with the golden ticket when you manage to pick a winner! Check it out…
