Review: Native Unearthed Deodorant Balm

Vegan & Eco-Friendly Deodorants

I have very much been struggling recently in my search for the perfect deodorant. When it came to such a sensitive part of my skin, vegan & cruelty-free just didn’t seem to cut it. I wanted something that didn’t feel like it was shrivelling me up, kept me odour free, was good for the environment, zero-waste… the list kept going, and I was getting more and more frustrated.

Since we started getting miniature heat waves here in Britain, the Greeench Deodorant Powder from Lush wasn’t quite cutting it for me (especially working long bar shifts, ew). I do still plan on using it when winter comes back around (I really liked the way it felt on my skin), it just isn’t quite long-lasting enough for the summer months. I also love buying things from Lush, because they support loads of great projects and are committed to reducing their waste. (Re-usable tubs and recycled paper? Yes please!).

Anyway, back to the product at hand. Native Unearthed was established in 2013, and they keep their range simple: one deodorant balm, three scents. And that’s it. Their philosophy is: ‘if we won’t put it in you, we won’t put it on you’ which (after the initial giggle) seems like quite a feat.

They only use ingredients that I can eat? Is that really going to keep me odour-free for an entire day? I was dubious to say the least, but they had been recommended to me by one of my non-hippie-type friends who had compared them to ‘regular’ deodorants and still found them worth mentioning. Huh. I mosied on over to their website and bought two jars (gotta make the most of that 10% discount for first time buyers).

Native Unearthed Deodorant Balm

Being the millennial that I am, without next-day delivery I kind of forgot I’d ordered them and was really confused when a handwritten parcel landed on my doorstep and kind of assumed it was from one of our parents.

Who’d’ve thought (and who came up with that contraction?) something that once appeared in a Birch Box would be hand packaged? Very cute. And, even cuter, I opened it up to find the two little pots sat upon one another, wrapped in a personalised thank you note for my purchase. It was all very lovely.

I spent the next few days trying them out and I haven’t looked back. One application in the morning keeps me completely odour-free all day long (even through a hefty shift behind the bar), and that’s just the original coconut and vanilla balm. The other pot I chose was the activated charcoal (yano, ‘cause I’m so hipster), which is their ‘super absorbent’ balm, and I’m dying to try it out.

Speaking of running out, I received my package about two weeks ago and I reckon I’m about a third of the way through a jar (…somebody stop me if I’m using too much). If an £8 jar is going to last me six weeks, I’d call that a win.

It’s a little more expensive than your standard spray-on deodorant, but there are sooo many benefits compared to a ‘standard’ deodorant:

  • They don’t contain harmful chemicals
  • They don’t block your pores
  • They’re kinder to the environment (even compared to roll-ons)
  • The jars are reusable (and you can even use them to store food after a good wash, because they’re made from kitchen-kind ingredients)

You can buy Native Unearthed deodorants at Ocado, Holland & Baretts or directly from their website where you can get a 10% discount on your first purchase! How about that?

Word on the street is that sometime this summer they’re releasing three new deodorant balms AND travel minis, and if you don’t know how excited travel minis make me, then you don’t know me at all. (As long as the lid comes off in a way that means they are easily refillable & reusable, otherwise it’s just a total waste of packaging *shudder*).

The only thing I’d like to see from Native Unearthed is metal jar tops. Even though I plan on re-using them, when they eventually break/get dropped/broken it’d be great to recycle the whole thing. That would well and truly seal the deal!
