Obviously MARvelous: Gross Grouty Grout

Most of you don’t know me well enough to know that I am OCD about a lot of things. One of those things is cleaning. For example, if I’m walking around my house and notice any crumbs on the floor, I get right down there and pick them up. That usually snowballs into finding more crumbs in a different spot, picking those up as well, and working my way around the entire area. Ive come to terms with the fact that this is just the way I am. Although it still highly annoys my husband, I don’t see myself changing anytime soon.

We purchased our home back in December 2008. It is our first house either of us have ever actually owned. Our house is great for a starter home. It is right about 2000sq feet, 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, and was built in 2005. It was a foreclosed home but in excellent, supreme condition with upgrades throughout the entire house. The whole downstairs portion of our home is all tile. It’s the bigger tile, 16″ I believe, and I have always felt tile was more sanitary and clean than carpet, thus, I was very happy.

That all changed last Wednesday, when my husband broke out our steam cleaner to mess around with it. He did one single line of our grout, and called me over to have a peak. I was in

SHOCK

!! (Id like to explain WHY I was in shock, because I have a logically good reason.) This is not only the first home Ive actually owned, but the first home Ive ever had with actual tile. I did not know our grout wasn’t supposed to be that dark. I never in a million years thought it was dirt, I just assumed we had dark grout! My husband knew the entire time and knowing how I am, decided to hide it for as long as possible.

I was stunned, embarrassed and immediately felt my OCD tendencies welling up inside me to start “tweaking out” on our entire downstairs floor. After doing almost 1/4 of the downstairs, Hubs finally couldn’t take it. He told me to calm down, relax, and we would complete this on Sunday. For me, that’s MUCH harder than it sounds, but after making him PROMISE it would be done Sunday, I pushed aside my compulsions and listened to him.

Fast forward to G day, past my weekly grocery shopping, to about 10am. We again got out the steam cleaner and I started going at the floor right where I left off. While I was in the midst of that, hubs started wiping down all of our baseboards, walls (for any kid hand prints and dirt) door frames, cabinets, etc.

A before and after example of the tile.

The right portion had already been cleaned, the left, had not.

We had a special helper working with us too!

A whole

SIX

hours later and our entire downstairs had been cleaned and completed. Hubs went behind me in each section and sealed our newly cleaned grout so it would be harder for new dirt to penetrate in. Our newly scrubbed floor, combined with our spotless walls and baseboards looks amazing! It’s honestly unreal how such little aspects of a home can make such a difference when it’s done properly!

Hind sight being 20/20 I am SO happy hubs finally decided to clue me in to the disgusting grout, despite the bruises on my knees and my achy hands muscles!
