Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream 7-Day Challenge & Giveaway!

Disclaimer: Press sample. See bottom.

I recently took the Neutrogena 7-Day Hand Cream Challenge, using the brand’s Norwegian Formula Hand Cream. And my results really speak for themselves!

This hand cream, which feels more like a nourishing ointment than a typical cream, has been around since 1972. It was originally created in Norway to help Arctic fisherman protect their skin from some of the coldest and harshest weather!

I have used this hand cream in the past – my mom actually discovered it, loved it, and put it in my Christmas stocking a couple years ago. I became an instant fan; so I was confident going into this challenge that it would perform well, and I was not disappointed!

Here’s the ingredients:

Pretty simple stuff.

So how does it hold up? Here’s my 7-day experience! I used the photos I posted on my Instagram account each day of my challenge!

Day 1

I started out the challenge with tight, dry skin that was visibly white in places where dryness was more extreme. I wasn’t using anything consistently for it, but I did get a bunch of new hand creams for Christmas. I also received this Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream to try around the same time, and having used it in the past, I was eager to reacquaint my skin with it! Neutrogena posed the 7-day challenge, and I was sold!

Day 2

After just one day of use, the whiteness on my dry skin wasn’t apparent. I only used the hand cream twice in those two days, and my hands felt fine. My cuticles still suffered, though. I continued to use cuticle oil to nourish the skin around my nails.

Day 3

On day 3, which was New Year’s Day, I went for a morning run in very chilly temps. I did arm myself with gloves, but I moisturized my hands with this hand cream prior to heading out for my run. I used a little more than normal to help protect them from the elements. The combination of using this cream, and using the gloves, helped my hands stay soft all day, without needing to reapply.

Day 4

On day 4, my area experienced what was called by weather gurus ”Hercules,” a big winter storm affecting 100 million people. Needless to say, it was cold! I used this hand cream just once, and my hands were comfortable through every flake that fell. Admittedly, I didn’t have to shovel. Thank goodness for the husband!

Day 5

My husband and I ventured out for dinner the day that Hercules ended. Our bitter cold snap was intensifying, so moisturizing my hands became even more important to me. After our meal, while drinking my tea, I whipped out my Neutrogena hand cream, applied, and got ready to go back out into the snow and home. Still noticed the white dry skin around my cuticles. My problem area!

Day 6

On day 6, temperatures got into the single digits, and felt in the negative. I had to run errands all morning, so at the end of the day, after all my running around was done, and I’d done dishes and cleaned up before and after hosting a get together, I treated my hands to more of this hand cream. At this point, I found that I use it to maintain how my hands feel; I never get to the point where I say, “I NEED something for my dry hands.” They are moisturized, so I use the cream to maintain that balance.

Day 7

On day 7, I used the hand cream after taking off my two-day-old mani. Prior to removing my mani, I finally noticed that my cuticles were looking better without cuticle oil. Not perfect, but definitely better than you can see in the earlier photo. I expect my cuticles to be stubborn – I’m always swiping acetone or nonacetone over them, painting my nails and taking pictures. It’s been an ongoing battle for years to moisturize them. At least this helps!

I think what makes this product so great is the almost ointment consistency it has. It’s definitely a concentrated formula, and it lasts. It’s meant to eliminate seven signs of damage:

  • Dryness
  • Chapping
  • Cracking
  • Split Nails
  • Dry cuticles
  • Scaliness
  • Roughness

It delivers on all these, to some degree, although I do not have split nails or cracking on my hands, and can not evaluate the effectiveness of this hand cream against those n-ailments (haah, see what I did there?! ha!). I did not experience one nail break during the challenge, although a couple nails are peeling and weak and while the cream can help, my nails are still growing out damage from my wedding nails.

A small amount of this goes a long way. My hands do feel greasy after application, especially if I use too much. Most times I will gently scrunch a tissue up in my hands after application, just enough to get rid of that greasy feeling so I don’t have to worry when I touch things, like my phone screen or steering wheel.

I received the formula that has a new fragrance. It’s perfumey, but not overpowering to me. It’s pleasant. If you are sensitive to scents, I’d recommend trying the fragrance-free versions of the hand cream.

You can get either types for a suggested retail price of $4.99, nationwide at food, drug and mass merchandisers, as well as on (linked in first paragraph).
