GOING EXPAT

ARE YOU MOVING OVERSEAS? LET THIS QUICK PACKING GUIDE HELP YOU PLAN & PRIORITISE FOR A SMOOTH MOVE #KICKINGGOALS

So you’ve made the decision to move overseas? Good for you! The sooner you start getting organized, the better; packing should be one of your top priorities. To make things as stress-free as possible, here’s a quick packing guide to getting it right.

Now you’ve made the decision to relocate, all that’s left is to actually move overseas – daunting? A little, but it’s going to be incredible. It’s a fresh start with a whole host of possibilities that many people dream of, but never actually do. This is your opportunity to immerse yourself in a new way of life; one that is undoubtedly very different to the one you’re used to. This guide is going to help you make the big move with as little stress as possible and minimise the moments spent pulling your hair out, so you still have some when you get there!

ASK FOR HELP

No matter how excited you are for your move, packing up your life can be daunting, a little upsetting and most definitely, time-consuming. Having someone to help you will be invaluable. Ask your friends and family to help you in the run up to your moving day. They can help you pack your suitcases, give you honest opinions and also make the process more fun. This will save you heaps of time and also ensure you only take what you need, not the whole kit-n’kaboodle sink included. They might also be able to help you sell items or put them into storage. Instead of feeling overwhelmed with your packing and upset by the impending “goodbyes”, let your friends and family enjoy this moment with you.

BE RUTHLESS & REALISTIC

You need to be realistic and ruthless when it comes to sorting through your life’s posessions. Make quick decisions about whether or not an item is in, or out. Transporting everything you own is going to cost a hell of a lot of time and money; The less you take with you, the more you save. Again, ask for help from your friends and family to make this easier. If there are things you don’t need but don’t want to get rid of, put them in storage for the time being. That way you know they are safe and accessible when you want them down the track.

INVEST IN HIGH QUALITY LUGGAGE

Goes without saying but I’ll say it anyway, your suitcases and bags need to be high-quality; you do want your belongings get to your destination in one piece don’t you? The last thing you need is all your worldly possessions to be strewn all over the airport tarmac. Go online and start looking for reviews on suitably sized luggage you can buy. Try not to focus too much on the design and go for quality instead. You can get in touch with your removalists too, if you need assistance packing up some of your items. This is particularly important if you want to transport pieces of furniture or fragile items over long distances.

It can be difficult packing up your life and moving it to a completely different country. Especially if it’s on the other side of the world. But see your packing process as a positive thing and look forward to starting your new life overseas.
