Kryolan Professional Makeup – an Overview and Review

Disclaimer: Press samples. See below for details.

I’d been curious about Kryolan, as a consumer, since February, when I watched Kryolan Pro Makeup Artist Kelly Thompson and her team work their magic with the Kryolan products backstage at the Falguni and Shane Peacock’s New York Fashion Week show.

At IMATS NYC this past weekend, Kryolan was one of my first stops! I wanted to learn more about the brand, and see more of the range. And admittedly, I dropped too much money on some of the beautiful eye shadow palettes!

Kryolan is an international beauty company that started in 1945 as a theatrical makeup producer in Berlin, Germany. Although it’s heavily marketed towards the pro makeup artist, they do sell to the consumer and the brand is working towards website sales by mid-summer (thank God!).

The owner of the company developed Aquacolor, the brand’s first product that’s still around. It’s a theatrical face and body paint that is glycerin-based and doesn’t crack; your body warms it and it moves with skin. Joe, national operations manager with the brand, told me that when the company first started, the makeup was sold by men riding bikes all over Germany to deliver the product. NEAT. I love stories like this about brands!

Product Offerings

One of the most popular Kryolan products among makeup artists, aside from Aquacolor, is Derma Color, the brand’s line of highly-pigmented concealers.

These concealers are used to cover tattoos, but more importantly, they can be used to even skintone by those who wish to cover up the marks of Lupus, cancer and burn scars. “Look good, feel good,” Joe told me about this line at the booth. Kryolan is changing people’s lives by helping them cover their discolorations.

Kryolan’s Derma Color is a popular product among Hollywood makeup artists, Joe said.

In the last couple years, Joe said that Kryolan introduced a silica-based HD line for video or camera makeup.

Kryolan also has amazing color cosmetics. Like blush, lip palettes and glosses:

And of course here’s the vibrant Aquacolor/body paint:

Here’s my absolute favorite, Kryolan’s eye shadow!

Kryolan has different types of shadow, from power to cream, and wet/dry shadow. There are 18-color variety palettes (shown above, and what I bought!) of powder shadows, and Viva Brilliant Color Medley palettes and singles, which is a wet or dry shadow that won’t mat in the pan when you use it wet. Here’s a close-up of the Viva:

There are so many more products that Kryolan makes – I highly recommend surfing the website!

Product Reviews

Along with the three 18-color Variety eye shadow palettes I bought, Joe offered me a sample of Tinted Moisturizer, Shimmering Event Foundation Gold and a Viva Brilliant Color Medley shadow in Peach.

I tested out the eye shadow, and loved the formula, which felt smooth. I tried it without primer. On the left is on its own, on the right is wet:

Next up is the Tinted Moisturizer:

The color (TM3) is a little too dark for my fairer skin coloring, but it was a nice formula. It has sunscreen, and can offer nice coverage for a tinted moisturizer. I would love to try this in TM1!

Shimmering Event Foundation Gold:

This product looks dark when it first goes on, but it’s entirely blendable and I think it’ll look great mixed in with my regular foundation. It’s got sunscreen, too.

I really like the smell of both face products. I can’t quite put my finger on the scent, but it’s not an overpowering department store smell, it’s just pleasant and…creamy. That’s the only word to describe it that I can think of! Creamy!

So – have you heard of Kryolan? What do you think of the brand’s beginnings, and the beautiful eye shadows?! I’d love to hear your thoughts!
