How To Save Money On Dorm Room Décor

We all know the season. It creeps up on you while you’re chilling at the beach or out shopping with your friends. When I realized it I thought, “Woah, school is right around the corner, and I’ve bought nothing for my dorm room.”

DIY Tapestry

I then went to my favorite online shopping website, Amazon, and started looking for the one item that would wrap my entire dorm together perfectly. A tapestry. Yes, I have one at home, but this is a new chapter in my life. I need a new look. After scrolling and scrolling and even more scrolling, I found the PERFECT tapestry. And then that’s when I saw it.

The price…

So, I did what any teenager would do if they wanted to buy something that was way out of her price range and had no job. I checked my bank account and, uh oh, $10? But, that’s okay because a few DIY’s can save the day!

I have a pretty nice collection of paint, and I have a white sheet. Oooo I also have rubber bands and a creative mind! I can make my own custom tapestry. With my spontaneous personality, I jumped right in and started making my personal tapestry.

Step 1 – Start by getting everything you need together.

Step 2 – To make the color for the tapestry, I got a squirt bottle and filled it with water and then added paint to it until I was satisfied with the color. You want to make sure you put in a lot of paint. You don’t want it to be just a lot of water. Don’t forget to stir/shake it all together!

Step 3 – I then folded the sheet in different ways and put rubber bands around it to make my own pattern.

Step 4 – The next part is in my opinion, the best part, and that is adding some color to that blank sheet. I put the colors where I wanted and then hung it up to dry for about a day.

Once it was completely dry, I fell instantly in love with it. It matched my color scheme for my dorm and it was so unique. What makes this DIY so special and different is that you can’t go to the store and buy this tapestry. It is completely unique and one of a kind. It’s definitely something everyone should try!

Next, I needed a few key pieces for my desk. I wanted to add a motivation chalkboard and a few little pencil holders. Now, I could either go to Walmart, and spend about $20 on a chalkboard and pencil holders, OR I could go out and buy some chalkboard paint and DIY my way through this. Well, of course, I chose DIY!

DIY Chalkboard

First, I went out and bought chalkboard paint for about $8 at Walmart. I then came home and with my father’s permission, got a nice flat piece of pile wood and started painting the front of it. After letting it dry, I decided to test it out with chalk and VOILA, you have your very own chalkboard.

DIY Pencil Holders

I decided I liked the matte look the chalkboard paint left, so I wanted to use it for the pencil holders as well. Then I went around my home and found a few tin cans. I washed and dried them, and then put a few layers of the paint on. After it was dry, I not only had two pencil holders but now I can write on them with chalk. How fun!

Considering that the tapestry I originally saw on Amazon was $50 and the price of two pencil holders and a chalkboard would add up to be about $18, I saved a total of $60 by buying chalkboard paint for $8! All I needed to do was get a little creative and look around my house at things I already had. Now I am so excited to get into my dorm and decorate!
