How to Get Rid of a Cold During Pregnancy

This last week or so, I’ve been trying to survive a pretty nasty cold… and as all pregnant women are too aware, we’re not allowed to take any medication during pregnancy with the exception of paracetamol.  There’s not a lot worse than feeling so ropey and full of cold when you’re trying to make a baby – especially if you’ve got other children who need your care too.  So I thought I’d round up my tips on how to get rid of a cold during pregnancy!

How to Get Rid of a Cold During Pregnancy

As if it wasn’t hard enough to get a good nights’ sleep when you’re heavily pregnant, being stuffed up full of cold makes it just that little bit more difficult.  Being stricken down with a cold can often be a sign that I’m pushing myself too hard and so I should take my foot of the pedal a little and slow down.  A couple of hours extra in bed, slumming on the sofa watching television and generally relaxing, helps your body recuperate and feel better much quicker.

If you’re full of cold, you’re likely to be losing more fluid than usual.  Now is not a time to become dehydrated – especially when you’re carrying a baby!  Dehydration in pregnancy can become a very serious condition for both you and baby.  Make sure you drink plenty of water to keep your fluid intake above your loss.  If you’re not a fan of water, I find diluted squash and fruit teas are a tasty way to keep on top of your fluid intake.

This might seem a strange one… but go with it…  My husband just doesn’t get it – but I can’t understand why!  Decent tissues are my saviour during a cold.  I buy the leading brand, balsam tissues to stop my face becoming an imitation of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.  I believe that if you get rid of the gunk stuffing up your sinuses using tissues, you’re bound to get over what nasty little cold virus you’ve picked up quicker.  And you won’t end up with a sore, chapped nose either if you’re using good tissues!

Taking a hot bath or shower can make you feel like a different person at the best of times, but when you’re trying to get rid of a cold during pregnancy it can really help.  Spending a while relaxing in steamy room can help to open up your airways and make it easier to breathe.  It also helps to loosen up all the mucous that’s residing behind your face to get it out using your awesome tissues!  If you don’t have the time for a hot bath or shower, put some hot water water in a bowl, lean over it and cover your head and the bowl with a towel to trap in the steam for a few minutes.

Menthol and Eucalyptus are both great oils to use whilst fighting off a cold.  The scent of either oil can help to break through the stuffiness and open up the airways, helping you breathe a little easier.  If I’m planning on taking a hot bath, I’ll fill the bathroom sink with some hot tap water and drop in some eucalyptus oil.  The steam it creates then fills the room with the strong scent which really helps to unblock your sinuses.  A menthol chest rub can improve your ability to sleep during the night, and even a small cloth placed at your bedside with a few drops of the eucalyptus oil on can really help too.
