About Michelle Beltano Curtis – Mykie Writes It
Welcome to Mykie Writes It! I’m glad you stopped by. This is where you can learn all about Michelle Beltano Curtis, the kind of writing services I offer, and see examples of my work. You’ll also learn a little about why I’ve been doing freelance writing for the last 10 years or so.
Reading and writing have always been near and dear to my heart and I began writing poetry and little short stories in junior high and high school. As an undergrad, I began as a creative writing major: However, I decided to change to a minor when I couldn’t let go of my obsession with women, gender and sexuality studies, which allowed me to study virtually anything through a feminist lens. Having always loved learning and being a naturally curious person, I probably could have stayed and continued my studies forever in many subjects, but eventually they tossed me out with degree in hand. I relished my role as an academic writer and researcher, earning several awards along the way and magna cum laude at graduation.
Writing is what I love to do, in any form, from creating technical manuals to creating how-to articles to writing entire historical fiction novels. It’s all creative to me and it all serves the same purpose, to help someone understand the world in a new and different way. Whether that help is to relax and escape life for a few hours or to instruct them on how to put together a bicycle matters little to me.
In addition to my academic and creative writing, I have experience writing in the fields of telecommunications sales, engineering, non-profit, academic and medical using a variety of voices for a variety of audiences with varying education levels. I have helped write technical specs for aircraft wheels and brakes, presentations and sales materials for Fortune 500 companies and brochures and newsletters for University programs. I have designed websites for University programs, caterers and creatives like myself.
I’m an analytical thinker with the ability to put abstract concepts into relatable terms. Allow me to do that for you and your company. I have reasonable rates with low overhead. I will be dedicated to you and your project alone and I always meet my deadlines.
When my health began to deteriorate from some mystery illness and I was forced to leave my full-time job in 2008, I had no idea it would be almost 10 years before I would be ready to return to the workforce. Despite debilitating symptoms that kept me prisoner to my own home, I was determined not to waste my time in spite of these circumstances. I decided to get the Master’s degree that I had decided I was too burned out to pursue right out of college. I chose National University in La Jolla, California, a reputable brick and mortar school with a great online MFA program in creative writing.
During my time in school, I had the pleasure of writing a novel for my thesis along with completing a number of short stories, poems and works of non-fiction for various workshops, some of which I had published along the way before my illness showed me the nightmares of which its truly made. For some time after that, my life became consumed with battling the illnesses I would eventually come to know as Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, or the EDS Trifecta for short (no worries, there won’t be a test). All of my energies and academic acumen went into figuring out what was wrong with me and how to heal it, as the trail of doctors I’d been visiting most of my life were all quite stumped.
The culmination of those efforts became the blog The Zebra Pit, where I have shared all that I have learned with my fellow “medical zebras” and “spoonies” so that they may also benefit from this knowledge. I have enjoyed this very much, but my health has improved to the point that I am full of energy and ready to expand and fully embrace a career once again.
Whether that means pushing harder to build my own freelance business or working for someone else, I am ready for the challenge and excited to see what the future has in store for me. I have a plethora of skills and look forward to seeing how I might be able to assist you.
