10 Reasons You Should DEFINITELY Study Abroad

Studying abroad can be an excellent opportunity to broaden your horizons and create incredible memories. I loved every minute of my semester abroad in Florence, and still talk about it any chance I get. Many students end up not going because they’re nervous to leave home or afraid they’ll miss too much while they’re gone but those fears are usually unwarranted. My semester abroad is what led me to live a life full of travel and I urge anyone who is on the fence to take the leap and study abroad.

In case you aren’t convinced, here are 10 reasons you should definitely study abroad:

You learn so much about yourself

Studying abroad is a whole lot of putting yourself out of your comfort zone. You’ll learn that you’re braver and more open to new experiences than you thought.

Create a second home

Studying abroad is different then going on vacation. You’ll create a second home, with local friends and insider knowledge. When you go home, you’ll find yourself missing your favorite coffee place or your favorite walk around town but when you go back for a visit it will feel like going home.

Create lasting friendships with people from all around the world

The people you meet abroad may just be people you hang around with for the weekend or they could become lifelong friends. Hanging out with them will give you insight into different cultures and you’ll have a reason to travel and visit their home countries!

The opportunity to try new foods

No matter where you study abroad there will be amazing new local foods for you to try. Try them all because for some reason pizza tastes so much better in Italy, and chocolate is much more delicious in Belgium…

Take Interesting Classes

Studying abroad gives you an opportunity to take interesting classes outside your major. It’s the perfect chance to take that immersive Spanish class or study art history in Rome.

It looks great on a resume

Studying abroad looks fantastic on your resume when you go to apply for jobs after graduation. Employers are always looking for well-rounded and globally minded applicants.

Adventure is at your fingertips

When you study abroad you have the opportunity to travel on weekends and breaks. You can jet off for a weekend in Paris or lounge on an island in the gulf of Thailand. Use that time wisely and you can cover a whole region during your semester!

Do it now while you’re young and not tied down

College is the best time to travel and live abroad. You don’t have any major responsibilities like loans or a mortgage so you can soak in as much of the world as possible!

It’s the Perfect Time to Learn Another Language

If you study in a country that doesn’t speak English, it’s pretty easy to pick up the basics of your host country’s language. Many universities even require foreign students to take a class in the host country’s language while studying abroad.

Create Unforgettable Memories

No matter where you go you will create life long memories that you can annoy your friends and family back home with! Go on and shamelessly, start every conversation with “When I lived in Italy….” or “That one time in Mumbai”, because the memories you make abroad will shape the adult you become.

I hope I’ve convinced you that if you have the opportunity, you NEED to travel abroad. I promise that it will be the most rewarding experience of your college years and you won’t regret it for one second.
